"California Botanic Garden"
California Botanic Garden is the modern embodiment of Susan Bixby Bryant’s vision for Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden near Yorba Linda, which she described in 1927 as her “botanic garden for the growing of [California] native trees, plants and wildflowers.” In addition to her desire to represent as many California plants as possible on the grounds, Susana’s plans included a library collection to support the study of native plants, an herbarium to preserve specimens from throughout the state for floristic examination, a research facility, and a nursery to propagate native plants.
Relocated to Claremont in 1951, the botanic garden continues to carry out Susana’s vision. Our guided tour will include a look at the history of this audacious undertaking a century ago as well as current facilities that continue the original vision: the library, herbarium, nursery, California seed bank, as well as a walking tour of the living collection on the grounds. We will learn that the historical mission of California Botanic Garden is even more compelling today.
