For over a decade, some academics and environmentalists have been reassessing the narrative of "LA as desert." This view, however, is not broadly understood or accepted by the wider public, nor has public policy to manage the region's water embraced a truly ecological approach over an engineering one. In this talk, landscape architect Jessica Hall will survey LA's historical streams, rivers, and wetlands; explore the issues that drove them underground (literally in some cases); look at how other regions have restored or managed waterways; and consider the range of possibilities for LA.

Jessica Hall is an ecologically-based landscape architect from the LA area. Having mapped historical streams in the region in an effort to find those where restoration may be feasible, her passion is to reinsert nature back into urban form and to humanize LA by wilding it. In 2001, she co-authored the report, Seeking Streams: A landscape framework for the upper Ballona Creek Watershed. She received a Switzer Environmental Fellowship and subsequent Leadership Grant and has served on the boards of Cultivating Sustainable Communities, the League of Conservation Voters (2008-2009), and the South Bay Parklands Conservancy. She is part of a team of advocates who created the LA Creek Freaks blog where they share essential information about LA’s historical ecology and update the public on relevant watery news and events. LA Creek Freaks recognize that our rivers and creeks are vital to our communities and are worth documenting and saving.
